Car insurance<\/h2>\n

In Greece, third party insurance is obligatory. This compulsory insurance is valid in all other EU countries and covers you if you have an accident causing damage to property or injury to anyone other than the driver. It doesn’t cover other costs (e.g. the cost of repairs to your own vehicle).<\/p>\n

You can also take out additional coverage and assistance called first party liability, covering other risks. This insurance extends your cover (e.g. to injuries to the driver, damage to your vehicle, theft of your vehicle\/its contents, vandalism, and legal assistance). Additional can be added to the insurance policy for extra fees.<\/p>\n

Insurers can apply different rules in each country. So your insurance could be limited by time (e.g. a month abroad) or by distance (e.g. 150km from the border of your home country) or might exclude some countries for some types of risk (such as theft).<\/p>\n

Car insurance in your host country<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

You must register your car in the country where you normally live. You don’t need to register your car in your host country if you can prove that you are staying there only temporarily e.g. as a student.<\/p>\n

When you register, you will have to present proof that you have insurance coverage.<\/p>\n

The Green Card<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Greek insurers don’t automatically provide a Green Card (which extends normal insurance to other European countries). When travelling outside of Greece, a Green Card should be requested from the insurance company well in advance.<\/p>\n
