Having a baby

The Greek medical system is generally considered to be of good quality.

It provides health care for all citizens, also to those who are not covered by a social insurance fund. It also provides medical services, depending on the type of care, entirely free or at minimal cost.

The system is run by theĀ Social Insurance InstituteĀ (IKA). If insured through IKA, an employee will obtain a medical booklet (vivliario) from the local IKA office, which must be taken on all visits to the doctor or hospital. The local IKA office can provide a list of doctors who work within the National Health System.

The National Health System Doctors may be affiliated with health centers or hospitals, or they may be in private practice. It is suggested to get recommendations from a friend or acquaintance to find a suitable gynecologist, obstetrician and/or midwife. Expectant mothers can contact their Embassy or Consular office in Greece, which may be able to provide a list of English-speaking doctors.

Unless she makes alternative arrangements, an expectant mother will give birth at the clinic or hospital where her doctor operates.

Home births are not usually in Greece.

When the child is born, the parents will be provided with a birth certificate by the hospital which has to be submitted to the local municipality. This document contains the child’s gender, weight and date of birth. The declaration to the local town hall must be made within 10 days of the birth.

Greek nationality is acquired automatically when a person is born of at least one Greek parent. Babies born to foreigners in Greece can acquire Greek nationality at the age of 18 under certain conditions and provided they do not simultaneously hold a foreign nationality.

Non-Greek citizens should check with their consulate or embassy concerning registration of the births abroad.
