Driving license

Driving license holders, issued by EU Member States, are allowed to drive, as long as they are not under 18 years old.

Holders of an international driving license (international license), which has been issued by any state, except Greece and do not have their usual residence in Greece, are allowed to drive.

Driving license holders, issued by non-EU countries, with which GreeceĀ  has signed a special agreement, are allowed to drive, as well as driving license holders as defined in international conventions or agreements and who do not have their usual residence in Greece.

When a person lives in Greece for more than 185 days per calendar year for personal or professional reasons, international driving licenses are not valid anymore, The purpose of recognizing international driving licenses is to facilitate those who travel occasionally or temporarily in the territory of another state for professional, tourist, personal, etc. reasonsĀ  and do not apply to persons permanently established in the country.

Also, if the holders of driving licenses issued by an EU Member State acquire regular residence in Greece, they will have to convert them into a similar category of Greek driving licenses.

Depending on the country of issue, the license may be exchanged for a Greek one. If an exchange is not possible, a full Greek driving test must be taken.
